SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket has been temporarily grounded after an anomaly during the second stage’s deorbit burn. Despite successfully delivering a Dragon capsule with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to orbit on the Crew-9 mission, the second stage failed to reenter the designated ocean zone.
SpaceX released a statement on X, saying, "We will resume launching once we better understand root cause."
This marks the third anomaly in three months for the Falcon 9. In July, a liquid oxygen leak during a Starlink mission caused the loss of 20 satellites, and in August, a booster failed to land on a drone ship. Although those issues were quickly addressed, this latest incident may delay critical upcoming missions, including ESA's Hera mission and NASA’s Europa Clipper launch.
Despite the setbacks, SpaceX has shown resilience, with previous anomalies resulting in minimal launch delays. It remains to be seen how quickly they’ll resolve this latest issue.

AI-driven story creation for children is gaining traction, and Ello is adding a unique twist. While companies like Amazon and startups such as Scarlet Panda and Story Spark already offer AI-generated stories, Ello’s Storytime feature distinguishes itself through an advanced AI system that adapts to a child's reading level and responses. This personalized approach teaches critical reading skills using phonics-based strategies, surpassing industry tools like OpenAI's Whisper and Google Cloud's speech API, according to the company.

Ello’s AI crafts stories tailored to weekly lessons, incorporating specific phonics sounds a child is learning, such as “ch” for “chair” or “cheer,” making reading practice engaging and interactive. The system is also designed with safety in mind, thoroughly tested with educators and reading specialists to ensure child-appropriate content. Although the current version offers preset story options, future updates are expected to increase children's involvement in creating their narratives.
Beyond Storytime, Ello launched its iOS app, broadening access beyond tablets. With over 700,000 books read by tens of thousands of families, the platform is priced at $14.99 per month, with discounted rates for families on government assistance. The company also partners with low-income schools to offer free access and has recently made its library of decodable children’s books available online for free.

A major outage has left Verizon customers across the U.S. without phone service. According to Downdetector, the issues began around 9:30 a.m. ET, with reports spiking to 105,000 by mid-morning. Users have reported that their phones are stuck in "SOS mode," allowing only emergency calls, while others are experiencing sporadic problems with texting.
Verizon acknowledged the disruption, stating, "We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and working quickly to resolve the problem." However, the cause of the outage remains undisclosed.
As of the latest update, user reports have dropped to about 50,000, though outages persist in multiple cities. Some speculate that Hurricane Helene, which caused disruptions in the Southeast, may be linked to the outage. Verizon has deployed mobile satellites and portable generators to restore service in affected areas but has not confirmed if the storm is connected to the current issue.
The outage follows Verizon's recent $20 billion acquisition of Frontier, which is expected to expand Verizon’s services once Frontier customers transition to new plans.
Note: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, the parent company of PCMag.
